Meall Cheo

Meall Cheo, or in English the Foggy Lump, is a mountain beside Leenane Hill, that has some fantastic panoramic views over Leenane village and the surrounding valleys.

Meall Cheo, aptly named "The Foggy Lump" in English, rises beside Leenane Hill. This peak forms part of the renowned Maumturks range and offers a challenging yet deeply rewarding hike, culminating in spectacular panoramic vistas over Leenane village and the surrounding valleys.
The route begins at Glencraff, with a steady ascent up the western shoulder at Anacair. From there, the trail turns northward along the summit ridge, where breathtaking views suddenly unfold across the Killary Fjord, North Connemara, and South Mayo. The descent follows the Western Way trail, leading back to the village.
Underfoot, the terrain is typically firm on the climbs but can be quite boggy in sections, while the summit ridge itself is dry and carpeted with moss. Given the conditions, appropriate footwear is essential for a safe and enjoyable journey.
